We released our final release of the patterns & practices Application Architecture Guide 2.0 on Codeplex.  It’s the "Microsoft playbook for application architecture."  This is our guide to help solution architects and developers make the most of the Microsoft platform.  It’s a distillation of many lessons learned.  It’s principle-based and pattern-oriented to provide a durable, evolvable backdrop for application architecture.  It’s a collaborative effort among product team members, field, industry experts, MVPs, and customers.

Key Links

Key Changes Since Beta 2

  • Added a foreword by Scott Guthrie.
  • Incorporated feedback from internal and external reviewers.
  • Tuned and pruned the recommendations across the entire guide.

Architecture Meta Frame (AMF)
The Architecture Meta Frame integrates context, application types, architecture styles, and an architecture frame to help map out the application architecture space.

ArchitectureMetaFrame

The Architecture Meta Frame serves as a durable, evolvable backdrop for the guidance in the patterns & practices Application Architecture Guide 2.0.

Key Scenarios for the Guide

  • Choose the right architecture for your application.
  • Choose the right technologies.
  • Make more effective choices for key engineering decisions.
  • Map appropriate strategies and patterns.
  • Map relevant patterns & practices solution assets.

Key Features of the Guide

  • Canonical Application Frame.  Describes at a meta-level, the tiers and layers that an architect should consider. Each tier/layer is described in terms of its focus, function, capabilities, common design patterns and technologies.
  • Application Types.  Canonical application archetypes to illustrate common application types.  Each archetype is described in terms of the target scenarios, technologies, patterns and infrastructure it contains. Each archetype will be mapped to the canonical app frame. They are illustrative of common app types and not comprehensive or definitive.
  • Architecture Frame.  A common set of categories for hot spots for key engineering decisions.
  • Quality Attributes.  A set of qualities/abilities that shape your application architecture: performance, security, scalability, manageability, deployment, communication, etc.
  • Principles, patterns and practices.  Using the frames as backdrops, the guide overlays relevant principles, patterns, and practices.
  • Technologies and capabilities.  A description and overview of the Microsoft application development platform and the main technologies and capabilities within it.

Tool to script and store SQL Server objects

Tracking changes to database structure is one of the most important piece of database development and it seems to be equally important along with your source code changes. Visual Studio and other client tools offer integration of SQL Server database with Visual SourceSafe. But it doesn’t fit properly in timeline development process unless efforts are made to buy these licenses and trained individuals with these tools. So, I started developing simple tool which can scripts and stores changes into Visual SourceSafe using SQL DMO and Visual SourceSafe automation. (note: This tool doesn’t do database backups) .  If interested, email me and i will send it to you. See the demo below

Terror Attack In Mumbai

As we have been hearing, terrorists have created havoc in Mumbai, India, killing over 80 people and injuring over 250, according to the latest reports.

Fingers are pointing to radical Muslims (not unsurprisingly since that is almost always the first reaction by Indian government officials), but there has been no official confirmation. Regardless of who was involved, the people who carried these attacks out are animals, with little sense of humanity or morality.

As Muslims, we condemn such senseless carnage against innocent civilians, wherever it may occur. This goes against the fundamental spirit of Islam, which promotes a culture of life and humanity, not bloodshed and violence. And another example of why extremist ideology, whatever that ideology may be, needs to be refuted and condemned.

“Whoever kills a person [unjustly]… it is as though he has killed all mankind. And whoever saves a life, it is as though he had saved all mankind.” (Qur’an, 5:32)

Today, we express our outrage and our condemnation of this senseless spilling of innocent blood.

May Allah grant patience to the victims of terrorism, and may He extract full justice against the perpetrators.

Assalam Alaykum wrb

Hope this post finds you all in the best of health and the highest state of Iman (spirit). We extended EID GREETINGS to you and all your family.

We believe during this very special month you took maximum benefits from it and might have included in your prayers your family, others – your loved ones, those who are ill, those who live in fear, those who go hungry, those who walk in darkness. Obviously! You tried hard to make this Ramadan better than the previous years.

May Allah guide all of us and put upon the straight path of faith, and help us to be filled with piety, patience, and kindness.

We pray for all humanity and in particular Muslim Ummah for the peace, prosperity, stability and dignity.

O Allah, keep the momentum and motivation sprit ALL the year. Aameen

Happy EID to YOU & ALL
